I have come to the realization that when you are a substitute you will more than likely from time to time be given the jobs/lesson(s) that the regular teacher does not want to be there for. One example was a kindergarten class I had not long ago. I was left the Art Masters project to do ALONE (Parents have always done it in every other class I have ever been in). Well needless to say we got through the art project with many tearful/frustrated 5 yr old's and ink all over the place. If a teacher reads this PLEASE never leave that much work for any one person to do with such young kids. I felt more sorry for the kids than myself because they didn't understand anything about the certain brush strokes or the amount of branches they had to do.
Well today I had a 2nd grade, so luckily the kids were older and it did not involve paint :)Today's lesson was about soil and the things that come in it. We discussed rocks, fossils, sticks, roots, etc what we didn't count on was learning about worms. Luckily the main teacher will be doing the bulk of that lesson with the class on Monday but I still had to give the overview and introduce the worms to the class. Ok I am so done with bugs for a while.
I have had teaching jobs everyday this week and I am stoked, rarely is there this much work. Every job was a request from teachers I have subbed for before so I think I must still be doing something right to be getting this many requests. Next week is full too!
Ok so I had a Special Education class today and one of the ways we could calm down certain children was through songs and we sang 5 Little Duckies multiple times and now the song will not get out of my head lol.
I have been in this class multiple times recently and I have a renewed respect for Special Education teachers every time. I truly dont know how they do all that they have too! They generally have a very short if any lunch break, and have to always be on their toes, with not just a backup plan B but a plan C and D too. I can't give all the credit to the classroom teacher becaue they have excellent aides that are vital to the class too. Without the aides it would be almost impossible to get anything accomplished, these aides help prepare the meals, implement the work testings, help with the assignements and assessments, and frequently have better control over their one on one students than the actual class teacher does. By coincidence an old high school friend Christie is the student teacher for that class and she seems to truly have the patience and knowledge for the Special Educ field, I just hope she has better luck getting a job than general Ed teachers have.
The Teaching field is almost impossible to get into out here in So. California. I had a 2nd grade today and met another substitute that was subbing for a teacher stuck in Europe (Ash Crisis). Well she has been subbing longer than I have. I have been subbing for almost 2 school years, she is in her 3rd year and like me is thinking of quitting the job for a while. We both graduated at the exact moment the economy started plummeting, and I thought a year or two at most and things would start improving. Not the case, we learned that more inservice days, informal testing days, and other personal days will be cut from the teachers school year next year, along with added furlough days. All of that equals LESS subbing days that myself and other fellow subs will be able to have (on top of this yrs cuts). Therefore I am considering looking into preschool work or the such because at almost 26 I feel like I should be having a stable job, benefits, and having that 401K going. I hate leaving the profession though because the second the market opens up, I hope to be somewhere near the front or more likely the middle of the line. Plus the CA Credential is good for 5 years before it EXPIRES! I am in my 2nd year now and am starting to wonder how the state is going to handle the thousands of teaching credentials expiring in just a short while just from the fellow teachers I graduated with, let alone the tens of thousands of others all over the state that have graduated since then.
Today I went with a class I was subbing for on a field trip. It was a little chaotic at first but luckily these are 3rd graders and not any younger. I had a group of 16 and several other adults with me so it was low stress and more fun. We went to George Key Ranch, in Placentia. There is very little Orange Groves left and luckily this place has one of the oldest and last remaining orange groves left.
When I was a child living on El Toro Base, there were Orange Groves all over the area, especially in the Irvine area. I used to love seeing them and walking around in their groves. Now those same areas are track housing, Irvine Spectrum Mall, and much more. I dont think there is even ONE orange tree left in that area. I cant help but every time I see an orange tree to think back to the days when there was so much open land and nothing but green and orange to be seen for sometimes a mile.
I was so grateful to see they have preserved this small but old ranch with one of the last orange groves, that way we can show and talk about the old Orange County to the younger generations that regretably will not get to experience the miles of groves I had growing up. Hard to believe that in a county that was named after the Orange Groves, that their is hardly one small grove left still to be found.
Easter= Church, Family, Friends, and EARTHQUAKES lol
Those of you that live anywhere in So California probably felt the quake on Sunday. It registered a 7.2 in Mexicali, Mexico, about 170 miles South of where I live in Northern Orange County. I had thought I was losing my mind because no one at my Aunts house was saying anything about the shaking. I looked at the blinds and noticed them swaying and yelled we were having an earthquake. At first it was a small rolling feeling as if we were on a boat, so we just stood around. Then it got larger and we all moved to doorways. My Aunt was yelling she was going to get motion sickness from the rocking and rolling feeling lol. It lasted about a minute and then it was over. Definitely an interesting Easter thats for sure :)
I had gone to the Huntington Beach Easter Sunrise Service at the HB Pier, and that was great, got to see many familiar faces. The get together at my Aunts went good after the quake as well, we had a good large dinner leaving us all full :) Now if we could all just get that feeling of rolling out of our systems I think we would all be good lol.
On a side note, I cant believe how many quakes we are having this year. I have felt more quakes in the past 4 months than I have in the past 15 years altogether. Kind of has everyone here a bit jumpy thinking a larger quake could be on the way. I dont believe in the rumors of THE BIG ONE coming soon cause we have all heard that a million times in our lives, but just in case I did go pick up some extra water jugs lol.
I am just sitting in my room and for whatever reason decided to finally create a blog. A close friend of mine recommended this site a while back and I finally decided to try it out.
Well here is a brief summary of myself for those of you that actually read this and will ahve no idea who I am lol.
I am a 25 year old female living in Orange County California with 8 room mates, yes 8, cause it is sooo expensive living in The OC as many know it. I graduated from California State University Long Beach in 2007 with my BA and the next year with my Teaching Credential. One bad thing about graduating when I did, the economy decided to tank the second I graduated and I am now in my SECOND year of subbing waiting for the education field to open up, I thought 5 years ago I would have my own class by now. Hey life happens when you are planning something else lol.
I am originally from Memphis Tennessee and still ahve very close ties and frequent visits to there, I even still have an accent somehow (I have been out here in The OC since I was 3 ). I come from a divorced family where I was the only child to now having 2 familys and 12 immediate family members now. I have a younger half brother who is 15 going on 30, a stepbrother my age (whom I knew BEFORE our parents got together), my stepsister Chris who is 5 years younger than my DAD, my 4 parents, brother in law and his two boys that he had with my stepsister. I am close to most in my family and refer to my stepsiblings as my real brothers and sisters.
I also have 3 jobs right now: Substitute Teacher for K-5th grade, work customer service at a retail shop, and just recently started tutoring a few hours a week. I have a very busy life and alot of people in my life so it is definitely never boring :) Also I recently started dating again (after my first serious relationship ended last fall). My new boyfriend and I are doing great so far and celebrate our 1 month in 2 days.
Well how is that for a summary lol. I will be going into depth on many of these topics at various postings so if anyone actually reads this they might find my life a bit interesting lol. Now onto researching and finding more out about this site lol.....
